Retail sales

retail sales dynamics

Monthly change in store turnover, in both constant prices (excluding inflation) and current prices. Presented broken down by product categories.

Why it matters

The closest real-world measure of whether customers are actually buying. The category breakdown shows where money is flowing in and where it's flowing out.

What's missing without it

Without the category breakdown, it's easy to mistake a decline in your own performance as a problem specific to your business, when it may reflect a broader market trend — or vice versa.

When it is used

When evaluating performance against market trends, planning promotions, or discussing reasons for declines with management.

How we use it

GUS publishes data around the 20th of the following month. December and holidays distort comparisons — year-on-year comparisons are used, not month-on-month.
