ANCHORING EFFECT

The tendency to rely on the first number encountered when making judgments, even when it has no logical connection to the subject being evaluated.

Why it matters

Explains why the same price can seem high or low depending on what we saw before.

What's missing without it

Without awareness of anchoring, prices are set in a vacuum, without a reference point for the customer.

When it is used

In pricing, promotions, packages, and negotiations.

How we use it

Showing the original price before a discount changes the perception of the current price.

Fun fact

In experiments, the anchor was often a number drawn from a wheel of fortune — and even though participants saw the random draw, their later estimates were influenced by the result. Awareness of the mechanism does not protect against its effect.
