CMYK

Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Black)

A subtractive color model primarily used in printing. Colors are created by layering cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks onto paper or another substrate; the color range differs from the screen-based RGB model.

Why it matters

Preparing files in print color space determines whether screen colors will translate accurately to paper. The difference between RGB and CMYK is the difference between a successful design and disappointment upon receiving the printed materials.

What's missing without it

A file sent to the printer in RGB returns with shifted colors — vibrant green on screen becomes muddy on paper, and the client faces a complaint.

When it is used

When preparing anything intended for print: flyers, catalogs, packaging, POS materials.

How we use it

Before sending a print job, the CMS checks whether the PDF file uses a CMYK color profile.
