In today's dynamic and constantly evolving world of marketing, creating advertising campaigns has become a true art. The first half of 2023 brought with it countless creative, surprising and thoughtfully crafted advertising initiatives that stood out from the crowd and captured the attention of audiences. From bold narratives to innovative visual strategies, the latest campaigns not only promote products and services, but also engage, inspire and attract consumers in a unique way. In this article, we take a close look at five of the most inspiring advertising campaigns of the first half of 2023, which not only define new standards in marketing but also leave a lasting impression on audiences. We will examine their key elements, their messages and why these campaigns deserved a place in our ranking!
1. Amazon – "Marvelous Mile"
Few companies in the first half of the year could afford experimental and innovative advertising campaigns. The exception was Amazon, which, on the occasion of the final season of the award-winning series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, created a unique advertising campaign. As part of "Marvelous Mile," the main street of downtown Manhattan, namely Fifth Avenue, was transformed beyond recognition. A pink carpet was laid out over a stretch of roughly 0.9 miles, and along the entire route several interactive stops could be seen that referenced previous seasons of the series. Here, the show's motifs were combined with the nostalgic aesthetic of the '50s and '60s.
Amazon also partnered with nearby stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue, a flagship for this part of New York. Visitors could see vintage cars and taxis, black-and-white cookies from Manischewitz and original costumes from the series displayed in six central store windows.
In total, around 750,000 participants attended the event, far exceeding expectations. The head of partnerships and events for Amazon Prime Video noted that this successful undertaking fits into the company's broader strategy of marketing based on spectacular events and culture.
The campaign reached beyond New York thanks to social media, including a hashtag challenge tied to the 1959 hit "Pink Shoe Laces," which also served as the soundtrack for eight surprise dance performances during the event. The #PSLChallenge reached nearly 50 million views on Instagram and TikTok.
2. Coca-Cola and "Create Real Magic"
In February 2023, Coca-Cola announced a partnership with OpenAI and Bain & Company. Its first results were shown in March, when the "Create Real Magic" platform was made available to digital creators. It combines the capabilities of GPT-4 and DALL-E, which creates images from text. Fans from the United States, Australia and selected European countries could visit the site until March 31 and use the platform as a canvas for experimentation and creative AI-based iterations. Digital creators could download and upload their work, and the best pieces appeared on Coca-Cola billboards in New York's Times Square and London's Piccadilly Circus.
We're excited to unlock a new generation of creativity offered by this rapidly evolving technology.
– James Quincey, chairman and CEO of The Coca‑Cola Company
The entire campaign is built on the premise that magic lives in unexpected moments that make our reality extraordinary. Coca-Cola continues to explore ways to use artificial intelligence in many areas – from internal knowledge management and workflow, through customer service and order placement, to creating point-of-sale materials in cooperation with Coca-Cola bottlers.
3. Burger King – "Whopper Whopper"
The most inspiring advertising campaigns of 2023 and their key elements
This year's Burger King campaign uses a refreshed version of the 1970s hit "Have It Your Way," turning it into the song "Whopper Whopper." The track is extremely simple, as it uses only a description of the ingredients of the Whopper burger. Yet this simplicity made the campaign hugely popular on social media abroad, which translated significantly into sales success.
The distinctive melody, which lists the individual ingredients of the Whopper burger, fits into the broader context of the "You Rule" strategy that Burger King introduced in October of the previous year in cooperation with the creative agency OKRP, responsible for the brand's advertising activities in the United States. However, it was primarily thanks to the work of the PHD agency, which focused on strategic media buying during the NFL season, that Burger King became the leader in the brand exposure category among restaurants on media platforms associated with the league.
The track became almost inseparable from football fans, quickly gaining popularity on social media. It created an avalanche of memes, tweets and remixes on TikTok, which contributed to its presence in the media space. To maintain this trend, Burger King decided to respond to consumer requests and make the track available on Spotify, adding it to its catalog at the beginning of this year. The result of this step is more than 5 million streams of the track on the streaming platform.
4. Dove and safe social media
Dove is a brand known for its work promoting positive body image. In the spring of this year, the company took steps to counteract the negative impact of social media on the mental health of younger users. Social media are hugely popular among younger audiences, which may be linked to the ongoing mental health crisis among young people. Through its campaign, Dove calls for systemic change.
As part of its long-running Self-Esteem Project Dove initiative, on April 12 the brand launched a partnership with musical artist and body positivity advocate Lizzo. The goal of this initiative is to support the Kids Online Safety Act of 2023 (KOSA), which is intended to introduce protective measures for children's experiences online and limit their exposure to toxic appearance-related content.
The centerpiece of this initiative is a three-minute film, "Cost of Beauty: A Dove Film," which tells the true story of a young woman with an eating disorder. This material, with a version of "You Are So Beautiful" as its background music, is proof of Dove's determination to resonate with audiences. The campaign is meant to set an example for other companies to place great importance on the content published on their social media.
5. Heinz and Absolut – an unusual collaboration
Some collaborations just make sense. At first glance, the pairing may seem a little unusual, but once you dig a little deeper, everything becomes clear. These two globally recognized brands joined forces to introduce a limited-edition tomato vodka sauce inspired by Gigi Hadid's viral TikTok recipe.
The Heinz x Absolut Tomato Vodka Pasta Sauce collaboration is a smooth tomato sauce with basil and cheese, enriched with the addition of vodka. During the cooking process, most of the alcohol evaporates, which intensifies the volatile flavor compounds in the tomatoes, creating a balance between creamy cheese and the aroma of tomato and basil. Tomato vodka sauce is nothing new in the culinary world. Penne alla vodka has been a classic of Italian restaurants for decades, and the alcohol helps combine the creamy base with the tomato sauce, giving it a balanced flavor. Vodka sauce is also known in the United States in Italian-American cuisine.
Interest in this recipe increased significantly after American model Gigi Hadid posted a recipe for pasta with spicy tomato sauce with added vodka on TikTok.
