PsychologyWhy people choose the way they do

NUDGE

A small change in how options are presented that increases the likelihood of a specific choice, without removing any options.

Why it matters

Enables supporting desired behaviors without coercion or bans.

What's missing without it

Decisions still happen without conscious design of default options — just randomly.

When it is used

In default settings, page layout, and the way questions are asked.

How we use it

Changing the default option while keeping it easy to opt out.

Fun fact

Richard Thaler received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2017 for his work on this mechanism. The most commonly cited example involves organ donation: countries with opt-out defaults have many times higher rates than those requiring explicit consent.
