Why it matters
It’s the simplest measure of trust in a service: the percentage of time it’s operational. But a complete picture only emerges when combined with errors and response time — 'running slowly' still counts as not working.
What's missing without it
Without measuring availability, outages become anecdotes — you don’t know whether they lasted five minutes or five hours, or whether things are better than they were a quarter ago.
