What does the Shoper report say?

But more interesting analyses can be drawn from the full version of the report.

The e-commerce industry has not yet reached saturation and there is still room for new players. In 2019, e-businesses were founded in all voivodeships, but almost half of the stores (47 percent) are concentrated in three voivodeships: Mazowieckie, Śląskie and Małopolskie – assesses Artur Halik, Head of Sales at Shoper. E-commerce in 2019: A Summary - Shoper — illustration 12019 was significant for e-businesses from the perspective of GDPR – the EU regulation, introduced in May 2018, forced sellers to take real steps to increase the security and comfort of buyers – adds Oliwia Tomalik, Marketing Manager at Shoper.

How did all this affect sales? Shoper's data shows that one in four online purchases in 2019 was made in stores in the “home and garden” sector. Stores in the “health and beauty” (18.5 percent) and “clothing” (13.5 percent) categories were also popular. In 2019, the largest number of stores, nearly one in four, operated in the "home and garden" industry. The clothing industry ranked second in terms of the number of active online stores (nearly 17 percent), and third place went to stores in the “health and beauty” category (over 13 percent). The number of stores in the “home and garden” and “health and beauty” industries is slightly higher than in the previous year. However, stores with clothing assortments slightly lost in number compared with 2018.

Black Week and payments

The most important conclusions from the E-commerce 360 degrees report

From 2019 we will also remember record interest in “Black week” – that is, the November week of special promotions and sales. 136 percent – that is how much greater traffic we recorded on the Shoper online store platform during Black Friday 2019 alone compared with the previous year. Also compared with a “regular” Friday, on November 22, 2019, the value of orders in Shoper online stores increased by 185 percent.

Another important piece of news: fast and cashless payments are the most frequently chosen form of payment for purchases made online in 2019. Importantly, the popularity of this method is growing quickly. In 2017, it was used in 38 percent of transactions in stores operating on Shoper software, and in 2019 more than half of purchases were paid for in this way. That is ten times more than cash payments (slightly less than 6 percent of transactions in the same period).
