In its latest third-quarter financial report, streaming giant NETFLIX announced that it is raising the prices of some of its subscriptions in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. The news sparked a wave of reactions and comments in the media and among users of the platform. It is worth considering what such price changes mean for the future of streaming services.

Price increases in the United States

According to a report by CNN Business, as of Wednesday the prices of two popular subscription plans in the United States will rise significantly. The premium package, which offers ad-free access to a wide range of content, will go up by $3 per month, reaching a price of $22.99. The basic plan, which gives the user access to content on one screen, will rise to $11.99. It is worth noting that all the remaining plans, including the basic ad-supported plan at $6.99 per month, will remain unchanged in price.

This price increase, although it represents a rise compared with earlier prices, may not come as a surprise given the dynamic nature of the streaming market and the growing costs of producing original content. Since the last price change in January 2022, competitors have also raised their rates, which is understandable in the context of striving to maintain the quality and variety of the content provided.

Global impact

NETFLIX raises subscription prices – which plans are getting more expensive?

The price changes do not apply only to customers in the United States. NETFLIX announced that price increases for some subscriptions will also be introduced in the United Kingdom and France. This global perspective raises the question of whether other countries will also see similar price changes in the future.

The streaming market is in a constant process of evolution, and price increases are one element of that evolution. Competition is becoming increasingly intense, and in order to maintain service quality and develop new content, streaming platforms often raise subscription prices. One example is Disney+, which raised prices by $3 per month in August this year, for the second time in 2023. The price of Hulu was also increased.

Another example is HBO Max, which is part of the parent company CNN, Warner Bros. Discovery. In January 2023, the subscription price was raised by $1 per month, the first price increase since the platform's debut.
