Smartphones are becoming unmatched leaders among devices generating the most traffic on websites. Find out why people choose mobile devices and how weather affects their decisions.
Smartphones continue to perform much better than computers. According to "A-Mobile-First World," a new report from Adobe Digital Insights (ADI), which examined data from Adobe Analytics, the number of smartphone visits is growing faster than for desktop computers. In just the last three years, smartphones gained as much as an 11% advantage.
The number of smartphone visits is much shorter when it comes to overall session duration and the number of pages viewed per visitor, said Costa Lasiy, data analyst for ADI.

This is primarily because smartphone users expect higher quality while also simplifying web browsing. Few content recipients are ready to open more than 20 pages on a given site at the same time. It is high time for creators to start simplifying their mobile solutions.
Today's internet users are not especially patient audiences. As it turns out, according to Google, 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than three seconds to load. According to ADI estimates, 5G and better connectivity could mean an additional USD 12 billion in annual revenue for retailers by 2021.

Summing up the last three years in the U.S. internet market, no major changes were noticeable. Smartphones are still the leaders among the devices used today.
Considering that since 2016, as much as 76.2% of the population in the U.S. has unlimited internet access, it is difficult to expect any growth coming from new users.
Websites must accept the shift to smartphones, because these are the only devices that have recorded growth in online visits, explains Costa Lasiy.
- Since January 2015, the number of smartphone visits to websites has increased by 89.4%.
- Meanwhile, the number of visits on tablets and computers fell by 30% and 16.6%, respectively.
Why do people use smartphones more often?
Why do people use smartphones more often?
Research created by ADI confirmed the often-repeated thesis that smartphones with the iOS operating system generate the most internet traffic. It turns out that as many as 59% of website visits come from these devices, while Android accounts for the remaining 41%.
Interestingly, the share of online visits from smartphones is strongly correlated with temperature. It was noted that places with warmer weather usually see more frequent use of mobile devices than desktop computers. This is connected to the fact that warmer temperatures encourage people to move around rather than sit at home. Every increase of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit raises the smartphone share by 1%.
How does place of residence affect the way a smartphone is used?
How does place of residence affect the way a smartphone is used?
People around the world perceive smartphones and the functions these mobile devices offer very differently. For example, in the U.S., twice as many people use them with virtual and augmented reality functions in mind. A similar attitude toward their smartphones is observed in Germany. In addition, Americans are much more convenience-oriented than Europeans, so they definitely more often use voice functions as a form of communication, including voice text input.
Summary
The Adobe Digital Insights report shows that smartphones already account for 89.4% of the growth in website visits since 2015, while tablets and computers are losing share. Mobile users are impatient — 53% abandon pages that take longer than three seconds to load, and faster 5G connectivity could bring retailers an additional USD 12 billion annually by 2021. Interestingly, analysts found that warmer weather increases the share of smartphone entries by 1% for every 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and iOS generates 59% of all mobile traffic. This is a signal for creators to simplify their mobile services and adapt them to the expectations of today's internet users.
