Mercedes-Benz introduces an innovation that could transform the electric car market.
The company is working on a special type of 'solar coating' capable of generating electricity directly on the vehicle's bodywork. With this technology, the range of electric cars could increase significantly, and the need for frequent charging on longer journeys would be reduced.
How does the 'solar coating' work?
The new technology from Mercedes-Benz is an ultra-thin layer just 5 micrometres thick and weighing about 50 grams per square metre. Although it is almost imperceptible, it has enormous energy potential. Its composition is based on cheap, non-toxic and easy-to-process materials, making it more environmentally friendly – it contains no silicon or rare earth metals.
The vehicle could travel 7,456 miles per year
An example vehicle with a surface area of 118 square feet, for example an SUV, covered with this coating, could generate enough energy to travel up to 7,456 miles per year under optimal sunny conditions. The energy can be used directly to power the electric motor or to top up the car battery. What's more, the technology also works when the vehicle is parked, ensuring continuous energy production.
Efficiency depends on location
In real-world conditions, the system's efficiency depends on factors such as access to sunlight, shading or geographical location. According to Mercedes-Benz's calculations, in Stuttgart, Germany, the coating could provide around 62% of daily energy needs, with an average distance of 32 miles. In Los Angeles, where sunlight is much greater, this technology could cover up to 100% of the driver's needs, and send surplus energy to the home grid thanks to a bidirectional charging system.
Mercedes' new technology could become a breakthrough that not only increases the functionality of electric cars, but also contributes to the popularity of more eco-friendly solutions in the automotive market.
