The year 2025 proved to be a breakthrough for The Coca-Cola Company on the marketing stage. The brand won 13 awards at the Cannes Lions festival, gold lions in key categories, and billions of views for global campaigns based on generative artificial intelligence.

Behind this success are specific strategies, bold technological decisions, and a philosophy best captured by the words of one of the key architects of this transformation: "either you lead, or you cry in the corner." This is the story of how the world's most famous brand decided to redefine what modern marketing is.

Thirteen Lions and One Clear Signal for the Industry

Cannes Lions 2025 – the world's largest advertising creativity festival – became the arena of Coca-Cola's triumph. The brand's campaigns and those of its sister brand Powerade won a total of 13 awards at the festival, which is considered the most prestigious industry event in the world.

This was not an accidental result – each of the awarded works reflected a coherent, well-thought-out marketing philosophy combining emotional consumer engagement with technological precision.

Manolo Arroyo, EVP and Global Chief Marketing Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, commented on this achievement: "We celebrated not only exceptional work. We celebrated the power of creativity that builds connections, inspires joy, and drives cultural impact. These honors reflect our enduring commitment to defining the future of marketing and building cultural relevance at scale." For the entire industry, the message was clear: the era of improvisation is over, and great marketing today requires strategic consistency.

The success at Cannes fits into a broader context of financial results. In the second half of 2025, Coca-Cola recorded 5% growth in organic revenue, and net sales reached $12.5 billion in the second quarter alone. Marketing campaigns were cited by management as a direct growth driver for many brands, including Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Fanta, and Powerade.

"Thanks for Coke-Creating" – When the World Becomes a Creative Agency

One of the most talked-about campaigns of the year was an initiative bearing two names: Every Coca-Cola is Welcome and Thanks for Coke-Creating. Its origins lie in a surprising field observation. For years, local artists around the world created their own interpretations of the famous Coca-Cola logo on signs, murals, and storefronts – spontaneously, out of love for the brand, without any formal commission.

Instead of correcting these unofficial versions, the brand decided to celebrate them. The campaign showcased the work of local artists and shop owners from Australia, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil, and Mexico, highlighting their creations in local outdoor media, press, and social media – turning grassroots passion for the brand into a movement of authenticity and community.

The unofficial logos even appeared on limited-edition cans and in an artistic photo book.

"What makes this campaign unique is the fact that the Coca-Cola brand is reinterpreted in every corner of the world through countless creative expressions. And these reinterpretations are possible only because the Coca-Cola logo is so deeply rooted in global culture.

" – comment from agency VML, lead creative partner of the campaign.

The campaign was developed by WPP Open X, led by VML, and supported by Essence Mediacom and Ogilvy PR. It won a Silver Lion in the Media category at Cannes Lions 2025, and earlier – in the same festival cycle – brought the brand awards at The One Show, Clio Awards, and El Ojo Awards.

Retail Media and Purchase Data – Gold in a Category That Changes the Rules of the Game

Alongside cultural campaigns, Coca-Cola was building an advantage in an entirely different dimension – sales precision. The campaign in the Retail & Commerce Media category showed how store data can become fuel for a digital growth machine.

The brand's strategy integrated data from retail media store networks with advanced off-site targeting, reaching consumers exactly at the moments when they were making purchasing decisions.

The model was based on three pillars: first-party data from points of sale, Performance Max technology from Google, and dynamic creative optimization. Data from the Coke+ loyalty app was combined with pixels tracking website traffic, enabling the creation of precise lookalike audiences – new consumers with characteristics similar to the brand's most loyal customers.

In an omnichannel campaign conducted in the Hong Kong market, the brand achieved a 6% year-over-year sales increase and a market share improvement of 3.6 percentage points. A brand lift study showed a 16-point increase in ad recall, a 19-point improvement in brand perception, and a 13-point increase in purchase consideration. These are hard numbers that convince both CFOs and Cannes jurors.

"As a brand competing in one of the most vibrant culinary cultures in the world, we had to ensure we were top of mind when consumers were deciding on a meal. Using the The Trade Desk platform gave us access to real-time personalization and optimization that allowed us to increase our market share.

"Adrian Chan, Manager Consumer Connection Planning CCTM, The Coca-Cola Company.

This approach is becoming an industry standard. According to WPP forecasts, commerce media is expected to account for 15.6% of global advertising spend in 2025, surpassing television in share of budgets for the first time. Coca-Cola was among those who not only foresaw this change but actively shaped it.

"Refresh Your Holidays" – AI as Director, Human as the Soul of the Campaign

The most discussed installment of Coca-Cola's marketing year became the holiday campaign Refresh Your Holidays. Once again, the brand bet on generative artificial intelligence – this time with even greater ambition and a significantly higher technical bar.

How Coca-Cola Changed Global Marketing at Cannes Lions

A five-person team of AI specialists spent 30 days analyzing and refining over 70,000 video clips, using models such as OpenAI Sora, Google Veo 3, and Luma AI. The result was three films: one narrative spot titled A Holiday Memory and two reinterpreted versions of the iconic Holidays Are Coming ad featuring Coca-Cola trucks. The AI production was handled by studios Silverside AI and Secret Level, with all creative work overseen by WPP Open X under the direction of VML.

The campaign was a direct continuation of the previous year's holiday experiments, but at a completely different level of execution. Pratik Thakar, Global Vice President and Head of Generative AI at The Coca-Cola Company, said: "Using advanced GenAI tools, we controlled every cinematic detail – from camera angles to the physics of realism.

The most revolutionary aspect is our seamless narrative continuity and character consistency. This is more than filming – it's a transformative leap into the future of creativity and technology."

"The genie is already out of the bottle. Either you lead, or you keep crying."Pratik Thakar, Global VP and Head of Generative AI, The Coca-Cola Company, at the Brandweek 2025 conference in Atlanta.

One of the key innovations of the campaign was geotargeting at the local level. Thanks to AI capabilities, viewers in Boston saw Coca-Cola trucks passing a "Welcome to Boston" sign – the campaign was programmatically adapted to specific cities and markets in real time. This is personalization at a scale that traditional television production could never enable.

Artistic Controversy Versus Business Effectiveness

The AI campaigns were not free from criticism, however. Artists, animators, and industry experts accused AI-driven production of devaluing human creative work and the tradition of holiday storytelling. They pointed out that the animated animals and snowy scenes were created based on the works of human artists – often without their consent or compensation. Comments appeared online describing the ad as "soulless," "bland," or "digital junk."

Coca-Cola's leadership did not back down, however. Although last year's AI-generated holiday ad sparked a wave of criticism from the creative community, it turned out to be one of the brand's most effective holiday campaigns by consumer metrics. Thakar emphasized that "the quality of execution is ten times better" compared to 2024, and the company is convinced that you cannot satisfy one hundred percent of the audience – if the majority responds positively, the brand will continue on its chosen path.

Industry analysts estimate that generative AI tools can reduce the cost of large-scale holiday production – typically ranging between $1 and $3 million – by as much as 60–70%. This is a financial argument that is hard to dismiss in a conversation with the board.

"Share a Coke" Returns in a New Form – Nostalgia Meets Personalization

Alongside debuting innovations, 2025 also brought a triumphant return of a classic. The brand relaunched the Share a Coke campaign on an entirely new scale – activating it across approximately 10 billion bottles and cans in over 120 countries, with over 30,000 names tailored to local markets.

The campaign contributed to transaction growth in the single-serve category, and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar achieved double-digit sales volume growth for the fourth consecutive quarter. This proves that great marketing does not always have to mean revolution – sometimes a perfectly refreshed classic is enough.

Studio X and the Digital Transformation of the Marketing Model

Behind many of the year's campaigns is a systemic change in Coca-Cola's marketing organizational structure. The share of digital media in the brand's advertising budget rose from less than 30% in 2019 to about 65% in 2024. In 2023, in collaboration with WPP, Studio X was created – a digital marketing ecosystem operating in 9 locations worldwide.

Within the organization, AI transformation is not confined to a single specialized department. Only two people in the entire company hold AI-related titles. Thakar recalled: "We told ourselves – we won't park this in one specific category, brand, or creative function. It has to transform everything."

This organizational model – diffuse, networked, permeating the entire structure – is proving to be the key to success. The ability to quickly test, learn, and scale campaigns allowed the brand to maintain global consistency while localizing content at a level impossible just a few years ago.

"In our previous model, creating a television ad took several months.

Today we produce thousands of pieces of digital content that are contextually relevant, and we measure their results in real time."James Quincey, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company.

Lesson for the Industry: Courage, Data, and Emotions as the Trinity of Success

The year 2025 showed that Coca-Cola's marketing operates at the intersection of three forces: creative courage, data precision, and unwavering faith in the power of emotional narratives.

The Thanks for Coke-Creating campaign proved that authenticity can be built on a global scale. Refresh Your Holidays showed that AI does not have to replace human creativity – it can multiply it. And the retail media results proved that every gold lion has a hard translation into sales.

According to the Kantar BrandZ report, the Coca-Cola brand consistently maintains its position among the world's most valuable brands, with a value exceeding $100 billion. Nielsen research indicates that in 2025, global retail media spending grew by over 20% year-over-year, reaching a value approaching $150 billion – and Coca-Cola is among the brands surfing this wave rather than running from it.

The ethical challenge related to AI in advertising remains open. The debate about the boundaries of generative creativity, artists' rights, and emotional authenticity is only gaining momentum. But one thing is certain: a brand that has maintained its position as a global leader for over 130 years knows how to balance tradition and innovation. And in 2025, it proved it once again.

The Coca-Cola Company

The Coca-Cola Company is one of the world's largest food and beverage corporations, founded in 1892 in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). The company operates in over 200 countries, employs over 80,000 people, and manages a portfolio of over 200 beverage brands, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Schweppes, Powerade, Minute Maid, and Smartwater.

The Coca-Cola brand has been consistently recognized for decades as one of the most valuable in the world – its value exceeds $100 billion according to the Kantar BrandZ ranking. Fun fact: the recipe for the original Coca-Cola is one of the world's most closely guarded trade secrets and is stored in a vault in Atlanta.

The year 2025 was another proof for the company that tradition and technology can not only coexist but together create history.
