SQL

Structured Query Language

A language used to define, read, and modify data in relational databases. It is used for tables, queries, indexes, reports, data migrations, and data control.

Why it matters

It’s the language of data communication: one query answers questions that would otherwise require hours of clicking in a dashboard. Reports, data analysis, and data fixes all start with SQL.

What's missing without it

Without SQL, you’re limited to views provided by the dashboard — any non-standard data question requires a developer or goes unanswered.

When it is used

Used in reporting, data analysis, migrations, diagnostics, and any direct work on databases. Applied in two main areas: data reporting and analysis, and technical database work (migrations, incident diagnosis).

How we use it

Example: Report on the number of publications, leads, and AI usage costs for a selected period. Dialects vary in details (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite). DO NOT CONFUSE with SQL as an acronym for 'Sales Qualified Lead' — in sales funnel discussions, it refers to something entirely different.
