In the third quarter of 2017, India overtook the United States in the number of smartphones sold in the country and became their second-largest market, with more than 40 million devices sold, the newspaper "The Hindu" reported.

In the third quarter of 2017, India recorded a 23 percent increase in smartphone sales compared with the same period last year.

The leading brands on the Indian market are China's Xiaomi and South Korea's Samsung, which together account for nearly half of the entire smartphone market.

Xiaomi sold 9.2 million phones in India, breathing down the neck of Samsung, whose results put it at sales of 9.4 million devices.

Analysts note that India is a market oriented toward budget phones. They also point out that the strong sales results for these devices in the country are the result of the low barrier to entry for phone production, which makes it easier for brands fighting for local customers to compete. Another growth factor for the smartphone market in India is the increasingly widespread availability of LTE networks.
