Preparing a photo or video for Instagram requires considering two important aspects - aspect ratio and resolution of the files.
Aspect ratio is the ratio of the image's width to its height.
Resolution is the number of pixels that make up the width and height of a photo or video.
Instagram allows publishing square, horizontal, and vertical photos or videos up to 1 minute long. Unfortunately, animated GIF files are not supported by the social platform, but this can be worked around by exporting GIF files as MP4.
Photo size and resolution on Instagram:
- vertical post: 1080 px x 1350 px - (4:5 ratio)
- square: 1080 x 1080 - (1:1 ratio)
- horizontal post: 1080 X 608 - (1.91:1 ratio)
- profile photo: 360×360 - (1:1 ratio)
- IGTV cover: 420 x 654 - (1:1.55 ratio)
Size and resolution for Story, IGTV, Live & Reels (vertical content):
- Photos: 1080 x 1920 (9:16 ratio)
- Video: 1080 x 1920 (9:16 ratio)
