After typing in the address google.ru, Russians yesterday could only read that the site was prohibited.
On Thursday, June 22, the Russian regulator Roskomnadzor ordered internet operators to block the domain Google.ru. The block lasted about three hours.
Early in the afternoon, Russian internet users began exchanging information that they had lost access to Google. After typing in the address google.ru, they could only read a notice that access to that site was prohibited. It turned out that Google had been placed on the list of sites that internet providers are obliged to block. In that registry one could also read that the Russian version of Google had been blocked at the request of the Federal Tax Service. Moreover, it stated there that the Google.ru domain had been on the list of so-called banned sites since 2016. However, until now operators had not received an order to block it.
After about three hours, access to the Russian version of Google was restored. Roskomnadzor explained that "Google had a redirect to a bookmaker's company, which is why the operators introduced the block. Google removed the redirect and the problem was quickly resolved."
