Mark Zuckerberg's statement caused a storm
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and head of Meta, has made a statement that caused a huge stir on social media. In a letter addressed to Jim Jordan, chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg revealed that President Joe Biden's administration had pressured his company to censor content related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zuckerberg admitted that as early as 2021, senior White House officials repeatedly pressured Meta to remove certain posts, including those of a satirical nature. He added that despite the pressure, the final decisions on removing content always rested with Meta's teams, who bear full responsibility for their actions, including those concerning changes to moderation policies related to COVID-19.
However, these are not the only accusations Zuckerberg has leveled against the Biden administration. In his statement, he also mentioned the actions of the FBI, which was said to have warned Meta about a potential disinformation operation by Russia concerning the Biden family and the company Burisma, in the period before the 2020 presidential election. Burisma, let us recall, is a Ukrainian gas company on whose board Hunter Biden, the son of the current US president, served until 2019.
Zuckerberg also addressed the matter of the temporary demotion of an article concerning corruption allegations against Hunter Biden, which, as it turned out, was not Russian disinformation. He admitted that the decision to limit the reach of that article was a mistake.
Zuckerberg's statement immediately provoked a reaction online, especially on platform X (formerly Twitter). Republicans on the Judiciary Committee hailed Zuckerberg's position as a "great victory for free speech." Commentator Patrick Bet-David stated that the head of Meta had admitted to cooperating with the Biden administration because he "acts honorably" and "gets ahead of the whistleblower." Bet-David also suggested that Zuckerberg may be distancing himself from the Democratic Party.
Zuckerberg's words sparked heated discussions and controversy, placing him at the center of the political debate on the role of social media in moderating content and the government's influence on these processes.
