Nissan and Honda, Japan's second and third largest car manufacturers, are considering the possibility of joining forces.
According to the Nikkei newspaper on Tuesday, talks are underway regarding a potential merger, though the paper did not disclose specific sources for this information.
Such a move could become one of the most significant events in the automotive industry since the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA in 2021, which led to the creation of the Stellantis group. The scale of this undertaking shows how dynamically the car market is currently changing.
Competition from Tesla
The main reason for the planned merger is the growing competition from Tesla and Chinese electric car manufacturers, who have gained a dominant position in the global market. The growing popularity of electromobility is forcing traditional manufacturers to take radical action to adapt to new realities.
According to information presented by Nikkei, as well as cited by Autonews, both companies plan to sign a memorandum of understanding, which would be the first step towards a full merger. This is an extension of their earlier cooperation, initiated in March, when an agreement was signed regarding the joint development of electric vehicles with advanced software.
Cooperation with Mitsubishi
The planned merger would aim not only to compete more effectively with Tesla and Chinese rivals, but also to strengthen their position in the domestic market against the dominant Toyota. The merger would also increase financial resources, enabling competition with global leaders such as Tesla or BYD.
The inclusion of Mitsubishi Motors in this alliance is also being considered, in which Nissan holds a 24% stake. The combined production of the three brands in the first half of 2024 was approximately four million cars, which still places them behind Toyota, which delivered 5.2 million vehicles in the same period.
Different situations of the companies
The announcement of these plans comes at a time when the situation of both companies is diametrically different. Nissan is struggling with a serious crisis that could force it to cut production by as much as 20%, and experts predict the possibility of the company completely withdrawing from the market. Meanwhile, Honda is on an upward trajectory, planning to introduce three new electric models from 2026.
A potential merger of the three brands could become the most significant event in the automotive industry in years. The market reacted positively to the Nikkei reports, published after the close of trading on the Japanese stock exchange. Honda shares on the New York Stock Exchange rose by more than 3.5%, while Nissan's stock jumped by as much as 17%.
